Tufts University Professor Creates Math Program that Seeks to Combat Gerrymandering Through Geometry

Moon Duchin—an associate professor of math and director of the Science, Technology and Society program at Tufts University—has helped to build a program that aims to “train mathematicians to serve as expert witnesses in court cases over redrawn electoral districts.

“It’s clear that this is the right moment to do this kind of work,” says Duchin, who believes that training a new generation of socially-engaged mathematicians could be key to solving issues of gerrymandering and widespread governmental dysfunction. “We want to harness all that energy.”
