Zika, GM Mosquitos and Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is under water in multiple ways. The municipal debt of $72Billion has led to loss of public utilities, jobs, and a migration to Florida. Climate change is contributing to severe weather events leading to widening mosquito breeding grounds and the potential of an island going under water. Photographer  Adal Maldonado has begun a photo project called Puerto Ricans under water see his facebook . And The Scientist did a news story on the backlash to decisions to release a GM mosquito made by Oxitec in the Florida Keys; local activism has caused the area to put the decision to the test with a referendum in November.  A few years back GPIA graduate student Tamara Laine produced and directed a documentary film about this debate in 2010  Scratching the Surface (https://vimeo.com/64006184)
